The Background: Inspiring people of all ages in the exciting world of STEM

Everton in the Community is one of the UK's top sporting charities, providing routes into education, training and employment to help steer young people towards a brighter future.

E-STEAM is an initiative developed by the charity that seeks to educate, engage and inspire the local community in all things STEAM and has been developed in response to an accelerated shift towards digital and technological-first solutions. Nationwide, employers are struggling to employ workers with the technical skills needed to respond to this rapid shift, so ESTEAM is committed to helping young people in the local community build their STEAM skillset and uncover more about STEAM careers.

EITC collaborated with Creative Hut to help develop a dedicated skills lab that would help to bridge this gap, while also inspiring a new generation in the amazing world of STEAM.

The Challenge: Supporting Everton with the delivery of their STEAM skills lab

Creative Hut, alongside a number of other partners, worked with EITC to help establish the programme of work for their pioneering ESTEAM initiative. Some of the primary barriers to young people engaging in STEAM based learning and careers are;

  • A lack of aspiration - they aren’t armed with the knowledge and understanding needed to pursue a career in a STEAM-based industry
  • Systemic barriers - socioeconomic inequalities can hold young people back, often due to a lack of exposure to opportunities
  • disengagement - STEAM subjects are not engaging enough within a schools or learning environment, meaning less and less students are choosing to pursue a career in a related field

Creative Hut needed to work closely with EITC and its associated partners to devise an interactive programme that would crucially engage young people in STEAM subjects, inspire them to explore potential careers in these fields and ultimately, bridge the widening STEAM skills gap.

The Solution: Inspiring through hands-on learning

Funded by a group of philanthropists known as the “First STEAM Squad” and together with partners including Sphero Sports, Appreciate Group, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and All About STEM, Creative Hut supported EITC in the establishment of the tailored education programme.

Delivered via a series of workshops, events, competition and career focused sessions alongside bespoke digital and online resources, the charity was able to engage its portfolio of partner schools and community projects in the new initiative and further engage them in STEAM subjects.

Our work with the team at Everton in the Community shows what can be accomplished when organisations work together. We’re thrilled to see the businesses in Merseyside taking STEAM education so seriously, and were proud to play our role in making the digital skills lab a reality. With the new space set to open in April, featuring facilities for podcasting, video editing, green screen and esports, it will provide an ongoing resource for the local community to continue engaging in these topics.

The Impact: Engaging, training and educating Merseyside in STEAM

So far, the programme has reached 65+ schools across Merseyside, inspired 1,200+ students, and trained more than 40 staff members in STEAM delivery. With the lab now open for regular sessions, this impact is set to grow significantly.

Everton in the Community has already begun marking key moments in the STEAM calendar, including hosting an event for International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

With major companies and industry professionals in attendance, John Whitfield, the Digital Training Business Partner at AstraZeneca said “AstraZeneca are immensely proud to be partnering with Everton in the Community and are excited to be supporting the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’ event at Goodison Park. We are looking forward to collaborating on further events and helping to ensure we are supporting STEM in the heart of our community.” showing that the impact and purpose of the lab has a very bright future ahead.
